Field Day at Fern Avenue Community Garden

Fern Avenue Community Garden

OBDA Field Day - Fern Avenue Community Garden

17th November 2013

OBDA invited the general public to attend a field day and opportunity to meet and talk with local organic farmers. For the last field day of 2013, the venue was the Fern Avenue Community Garden, on Sunday 17th November.

Between 20-30 people attended on the glorious sunny day, and were greeted by the OBDA committee before introductions by OBDA Chairman, Monika Fiebig.
Monika then handed over to Dr. Bernie OModei, who gave an introduction to his system of solar irrigation, which he invented, designed and installed at the community garden. The principle of measured irrigation states that:
For any two nozzles at the same pressure, the ratio of the flow rates is independent of the pressure

For conventional pressurised irrigation systems, the volume of water delivered to a plant during the irrigation event depends upon the flow rate. But for measured irrigation the volume of water delivered to a plant during the irrigation event is independent of the flow rate.
Cecile Storrie then gave a guided tour of the community garden, explaining its history and use as well as pointing out the key features such as rain water tanks, strawbale/mudbrick building, composting and the various plots used by different groups in the local area. Lunch was baked potatoes cooked in the gardens purpose built oven.......
