OBDA Field Day at Sunningdale Farm
Sunningdale Farm
Sunningdale Farm, owned and managed by Anne and Phillip Duguid, is a 75Ha certified bio‐dynamic beef cattle farm, situated on the beautiful Southern Fleurieu Peninsula, south of Adelaide, South Australia.
When they purchased the farm in 1997 it was farmed conventionally.
Ten years ago, Anne developed breast cancer and Phillip, who is a part time General Practitioner, was becoming aware of the link between unhealthy diet/food and poor health in his patients.
As a consequence they decided to cease using chemicals on their farm and to farm organically.
Further research indicated farming bio‐dynamically was an even better way to farm.
Their focus is now on creating healthy, living soils, producing healthy pastures, which produce healthy livestock and quality meat.
The Duguids use Lowline Bulls over Angus Cows.
Lowline is an Australian breed, smaller in stature, with excellent temperament, ease of calving and producing well marbled fine grade quality meat.
Their bio‐dynamic garden is part of Australia’s Open Garden Scheme in May each year.
Adjacent to the garden is 6 acres of heritage scrub, where many
varieties of birds and kangaroos make their home.
The Duguids are great believers in biodiversity and they actively integrate all areas of their farm which creates a peaceful, harmonious, inspiring healthy environment.
A highlight of the BOAB Field Day was a tour of Anne and Phillip’s edible landscape, built around their home.
Their home environment is an excellent example of how a working garden, producing a variety of vegetables and herbs can at the same time be an attractive, peaceful and reflective setting. |
