OBDA Field Day at Cul Fahane
The field day at Liam and Madeleine Burns’ property – “Cul Fahane” was a significant event for OBDA as it was the launch of the new organisation, the Organic and B-D Alliance. In the comforts of the shed (it was a cold and windy day) members were treated to a sumptuous lunch, featuring the Burns’ own “Triple B” beef and were captivated by an informative show and tell from Tony and Pam Barich, bio-dynamic grape growers from the Riverland. Tony and Pam have been operating their vineyard on organic and bio-dynamic principles for over twenty years and discussed how and how their property has achieved a wonderful balance of commercial farming and co-existence with the environment. The property supports flora and fauna that live comfortably within the property – in harmony with the activities of the vineyard.
Liam Burns led the members on a short walk around their farm, sharing the history of Triple B beef and the process of rearing cattle through to their marketing efforts through the farmer’s markets – in particular the Willunga Market. Liam and Madeleine have embarked on an extensive tree planting exercise to build shelter belts and improve the bio-diversity of the property.
The launch of OBDA – “Linking Growers with Consumers” and its website was well received and much discussion revolved around using the website as a tool to communicate the various activities within the industry. The interim President Graeme Schultz spoke of the need to build upon the early work of BOAB to create awareness of nutrition in food and how it contributes to people’s long term health and well being. |
